Description
The Duke of York Column and Steps is a Grade I listed commemorative column and a focal point for town planning, located at Waterloo Place in the City of Westminster. Built between 1831 and 1834, the column was designed by Benjamin Wyatt, while the bronze statue of the Duke was created by Sir Richard Westmacott. The layout features a grand flight of steps leading down to the Mall and St James's Park, serving as the terminal feature of Nash's Via Triumphalis, situated on the site of the former Carlton House, with the impressive Carlton House Terrace flanking the composition. The column is made of granite and stands in the Tuscan order, rising from a square pedestal. Its capital supports a square balcony, drum, and dome, modeled after Wren's Monument, and is topped by the statue of the Duke in uniform.
