Description
Millbank Primary School and Playcentre is a primary school built in 1901 by the London School Board architects as part of the London County Council Millbank Estate. The building is constructed of stock brick with red brick and slight stone dressings, topped with a tiled roof. It features a free "Queen Anne" style that evolves from the Board school type established by Robson and Stevenson. The school consists of a two-storey block arranged in a shallow L plan, with nine windows facing the street. The entrance is located in the south gable end.
The street-facing windows are grouped in threes, with a central broad gabled break and gabled half dormer at the center of each wing. The windows are large, two-light glazing bar flush framed sashes. The apex of the central gable features blind cusped lancet patterning in red brick, while the half dormer gables are rendered and adorned with strapwork ornamented cartouches that inscribe the date. The steep gable end roof is topped with a central bellcote-fleche. The elevations of the rear range are highlighted by stone pinnacle-capped buttress-piers and a parapet. This building is included for its group value with the Millbank Estate.
