Description
Howard House is a mid-19th century artisan housing building designed in the form of a mansion. It is constructed from brown and red brick and features two slightly projecting pedimented end wings. The building stands four storeys tall and has a total of seven windows. There is an eaves cornice and brick bands at the first and second floor sill heights. The second and third floor windows of the end wings are set in brick recesses with panels between them. The ground floor has sash windows with gauged flat arches, while the other windows are casements. A central stuccoed feature above the second floor window is topped with a pediment and consoles. The entrance includes a panelled door with a fanlight above, protected by a wrought iron panel. The doorcase is adorned with an architrave surround and a rusticated arch featuring a keystone.
Howard House, along with Nos 20 to 35 Albert Cottages and Nos 7 to 20 Victoria Cottages, forms a group representing different types of 19th-century artisan housing. This group is also associated with the nearby buildings on Underwood Road.
