Description
Nos 46 and 48 Copperfield Road is a former Free Ragged Day School that has been converted into a warehouse. The buildings were originally constructed as warehouses in the early 1870s, with No 46 being converted for school use in 1876 and No 48 in 1895. There have been some alterations to the structures.
The buildings are made of yellow brick, with No 48 painted. They are three storeys tall, with No 46 featuring six bays and No 48 having three bays. The entrances to No 46 are located in the second and fifth bays, while the entrance to No 48 is in the centre and slightly projects forward. No 48 has paired windows, as do the first and sixth bays of No 46, except on the top floor. The windows have segmental treads and are mainly tripartite sashes in No 46, while No 48 features plate glass.
No 46 has pilaster strips at the ends and centre, a cornice, and a central pediment with an attached belcote. No 48 has a parapet. There are wall cranes located at the top floor level, with one in the centre bay of No 48 and one in each of the second and fifth bays of No 46.
The school was provided by Dr Barnardo and was known to be one of the largest ragged schools in London, remaining open until 1908. It also operated as the Factory Girls Club and Institute from 1877 to 1915.
