Description
The British and Foreign Wharves G warehouse is a substantial but plain stock brick warehouse built around 1860-1870, prominently located by St Katherine's Dock and along the west side of Alderman's Stairs. The building stands five storeys tall with a nine-bay front that is cranked to align with the street. It features parapet coping, and the end bays have an additional storey. The façade includes segmental gauged header brick arches above iron-framed small pane windows, which are symmetrically arranged around three hatch ranks with shallow timber jambs. There are late 19th-century flat plate iron hoists that are straight braced.
The riverside elevation consists of seven bays and maintains the five-storey height throughout, also featuring a parapet. It has two hatch ranks that are symmetrically spaced in the end and centre bays, with the same window arrangement as the street front. The ground floors of the hatch ranks include larger segmental arched loading bays.
Internally, the warehouse has timber floors supported by cast iron columns. It is one of the few remaining warehouse buildings on what was once a crowded street leading to Wapping Way. The structure has a vigorous character, highlighted by its arched windows and the way it conforms to the street's curve, making it a notable example of its period.
