Description

Wheat Wharf is a former grain warehouse dating from the early to mid-19th century. The front is faced with white Suffolk brick, while the walls behind are stock brick. It has a pitched slate roof.

The exterior is four storeys high (five to the central bay) and has a near-symmetrical front of twelve bays, with an additional bay to the right section. The eaves have a stepped brick cornice, rising into a low, broad gable over the central five bays, which features a column of hatch ranks in the outer bays. Ground-floor openings have been altered, some with concrete lintels. The upper floors contain tripartite windows with timber frames and segmental brick arches. A six-bay gable end is present on Maguire Street. The rear elevation has two flat-roofed dormer hatches with simple timber beam hoists and small, two-light windows with cambered brick arches and Portland stone sills.

The interior is believed to be entirely timber-framed, with five aisles of square posts and bracket spreader caps supporting the floors and a queen post roof. Open timber staircases are also present. The building represents a rare survival of an early warehouse interior.
