Description
Tower Hamlets Library, located at 277 Bancroft Road, was built in two parts. The northern section dates back to 1865 and features white stone with a heavy eaves cornice that is panelled below. It has two storeys and five windows, with bands above the first-floor windows. The windows are three-light with round arched heads, separated by Corinthian pilasters, and there are double engaged pillars at the ends. The ground floor includes a central round arched window and door, flanked by Tuscan pilasters, with the outer ones being rusticated. Above the ground floor, there is a broad entablature with a cornice, frieze, and architrave. The southern part of the building is likely older and also has two storeys, featuring six windows, with the top-floor windows being round-headed. It has a cornice with a blocking course and a frieze adorned with wreaths, as well as a band between the storeys and enriched keystones above the windows. The ground floor of this section is rusticated.
