Description
The Central Foundation Girls School, dating from 1897, occupies a site with educational history extending back to 1701. The building is designed in a Jacobean revival style, although with distinctive variations. The construction is primarily red brick with white stone dressings and a slate roof. A prominent turret features a gabled cupola. Doors are framed by Gibbs architraves. Decorative stone panels bear shields. Horizontal string courses run along the facade. The school is two storeys high and contains attics, generally with seven windows per elevation, presenting a variety of window types. The main entrance is located on the first floor and is accessed via a balustraded staircase, surmounted by a bracketed hood.
