Description

The archway to the Rotherhithe Tunnel approach was built in 1908 and designed by architect Thomas Blashill with chief engineer Sir Maurice Fitzmaurice. It features two massive banded granite piers that have plinths and cornice caps, which support a flanged and bolted semicircular steel arch. This design illustrates the arched bracing of the tunnel itself. The tunnel was opened by the Prince of Wales, who later became King George V, in the same year. This archway is identical to the one located on the Middlesex shore in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
