Description
The Star and Cross Church, formerly known as the Welsh Presbyterian Chapel, is a Presbyterian chapel dated 1888. It is constructed from English brick with rubbed brick and stone dressings, featuring London stocks on the right return and rear where the architectural embellishment is less pronounced. The church has gable facing roofs made of slate, topped with a metal-roofed cupola.
Architecturally, it showcases a mix of Queen Anne and Romanesque Revivals styles. The T-shaped plan is divided into two tiers, likely reflecting a galleried interior, with a shallow transept at the ritual east end and a single-storey entrance porch at the ritual west. All openings are round-arched.
The exterior features a tripartite entrance at the ritual west, with the central projecting section topped by a broken pediment and flanked by lights. The ritual north elevation has strip buttresses that finish in broad scroll brackets topped by pediments, along with plate tracery and Dutch gables. The returns have three bays, each distinguished by the aforementioned buttresses. A brick dentil cornice runs along the aisles of the west elevation and returns.
The combination of different features and materials creates a varied and picturesque composition, marking it as an early example of the Queen Anne style applied to a church or chapel. The interior has not been inspected.
