Description

A terrace of four houses dating from circa 1807 to 1810, possibly designed by SP Cockerell, is located on the south side of Nelson Square, Southwark. The houses are constructed of stock brick with a parapet; numbers 45 and 47 have banded, rusticated stuccoed ground floors. Numbers 44 to 46 are five storeys high with a sunken basement, each with three bays. Number 47 is four storeys high with a sunken basement, and also has three bays. The round-arched doorways to numbers 45 and 47 feature fluted Doric columns, cornice heads, fluted pilaster jambs, and fanlights. The doorways to the former numbers 44 and 46 have been altered to windows. The windows have flat, gauged-brick arches with sash windows and glazing bars, except on the ground floors of numbers 45 and 47 which feature segmental arches with struck voussoirs in stucco. The two left-hand windows of number 47 are in a slightly projecting, full-height bow section. A wrought-iron balcony, supported by iron brackets, runs along the first floor of all four houses. The interior has not been inspected. Original spearhead railings with urn finials are present as subsidiary features. These are some of the last remaining houses from the circa 1807 to 1810 square.
