Description
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a small village church dating from the 12th century, with additions made in 1724. The original structure is built of rubble-stone, while the 18th-century work is in plain brick. The church features pitched slated roofs that extend to the eaves. The aisleless nave and chancel walls date back to the 12th century. The south porch and the northwest Lethieullier chapel were added in 1724, at which time the chancel was also rebuilt. The nave has round-headed windows on the south and west sides, which are framed with later stucco surrounds. Inside, there is a narrow round-headed window with a deep reveal located high in the north wall towards the west. The original tall, narrow round-headed doorways on the north and south sides are now sheltered by the south porch and the north chapel. There are oculi on the north and south sides of the north chapel. A louvred weatherboarded bellcote sits above the west gable of the nave. The chancel features a simple eastern pediment and plain round-headed windows. The nave and chancel have an arched plaster ceiling. The chapel contains a monument to the Lethieullier family, dating from 1737 and later. The church also houses notable monuments from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The church was restored in 1982.
