Description
The General Lying-in Hospital is an early to mid-19th century building located on York Road. It is two storeys high with an attic and basement, featuring seven windows on its west front. The structure is constructed of red brick, with a stuccoed attic storey above an entablature. The central section is recessed and designed as a full-height tetrastyle Ionic portico in antis, flanked by stuccoed pilasters at the corners of the side sections. An inscription in the frieze reads: "GENERAL LYING-IN HOSPITAL, UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF HER MAJESTY AND HRH THE PRINCESS OF WALES." The building has replaced sash windows with glazing bars, and the outer windows are set in moulded architraves. A central flight of steps leads to the porch, which features a double door with sidelights. The south elevation is similar but lacks a porch and has alterations to the attic storey. Wrought iron area railings surround the property.
