Description
The Burnside Monument is a large memorial located in Brompton Cemetery, made of grey granite. It measures approximately 1.2 meters wide by 1.5 meters high and is set on a low plinth with a base that includes contiguous seats. The end blocks of the seats serve as stops for the kerb of a ledger stone pavement in front of the headstone, with two slabs inscribed 'ALLAN' and 'IRIS'. The headstone features a relief carving of a neo-Byzantine angel figure, with its hands resting on a Latin cross. The plinth is adorned with deeply incised block capitals that read 'BURNSIDE', while the base below commemorates Allan Eaton Meldrum Burnside (1898-1937) and his sister Margaret Allan Iris Burnside (1894-1915). They were the children of Thomas David Meldrum Burnside (1835-1900) and Josephine Smith Eaton Burnside (1866-1943), and the grandchildren of Timothy Eaton (1834-1907) and Margaret Eaton (née Beattie, 1841-1933) from Toronto, Canada.
