Description

The Tomb of Benjamin Golding, located in Brompton Cemetery, is a small rectangular mausoleum built from Portland stone in a Neoclassical/Early Christian style. It faces the central avenue near the northern entrance of the cemetery. The main doorway features a raised surround with two carved rosettes and is fitted with a heavy iron door adorned with rosette and scrollwork ornamentation. Above the door is an inscription panel that reads: 'Family Tomb of Benjamin Golding M.D.'

The sides and rear of the mausoleum are decorated with a series of tall shallow round-headed panels, each carved with a Maltese cross and a row of dentils. Below these panels are inscriptions that commemorate various members of the Golding family, with Benjamin Golding being noted as 'the founder of the Charing Cross Hospital, London.' Above the inscriptions is a frieze of square panels that are pierced with a design of two superimposed crosses. Each of the two pediments features a simple design of a Calvary cross, and the mausoleum is topped with a ridged stone roof.
