Description

This is a late 19th-century terrace of nine houses, numbered 28 to 35 Oakley Street. The terrace is symmetrical in design, standing four storeys tall plus an attic and basement. The front facades of numbers 28 to 31 each have four windows, while numbers 32 to 35 have two windows apiece. The building is faced in stucco, with vertical lines indicating the original stonework on the ground floor. Corinthian-style porches are present. A continuous balcony runs along the front of the first floor. The first floor windows of numbers 28, 34, and 35 are accentuated by giant pilasters and segmental pediments, and dormers break the roofline of the attic storey. Numbers 29 and 33 are slightly recessed from the main line of the terrace. Elaborate urn decorations adorn the parapet, which is supported by a modillion cornice. The front is enclosed by area railings. The terrace is notable as a relatively complete example of a lavish, though unconventional, terrace house development.
