Description
This garden wall, dating from the mid-16th to mid-17th centuries and subject to later repairs and alterations, is a significant historical remnant. The wall, approximately 70 metres in length, originally formed the eastern boundary of Winchester House, built between 1639 and 1649 for James, Duke of Hamilton, and was part of the garden of a Manor House constructed for Henry VIII after 1536. The earliest section of the wall is constructed of brick in a random bond. The southern end was rebuilt in the early to mid-19th century with later brickwork. The wall returns to the east for approximately 15 metres and then for about 20 metres to the north, where the most complete section remains, still featuring its original triangular brick coping. The wall forms the south-western boundary and garden boundary of number 25.
