Description

Colville Primary School is a school building that opened in June 1879, designed by E R Robson. It is constructed of yellow brick with red dressings and features stone coping on the gables. The roof is steeply pitched and tiled. The building has three storeys, including half-dormers, and a range of classrooms on the main front, with the hall and staircases located at the rear. The facade is twelve windows wide, with the outer pairs of bays slightly projecting forward and topped by gables. There are thin red horizontal bands at the ground floor that create a rusticated effect. The first-floor windows are set within a blind arcade, with brick pilasters in between and carved brick aprons beneath most windows. The second floor features four gabled dormers with round-headed windows, and square windows are positioned between the dormers, which may have been added later. The other windows are square-headed. Above the first floor, there is a brick dentil cornice. The sashed windows have small panes and glazing bars. Decorative stone plaques are located on the end bays in the gables and below. The building has tall chimneys and returns to the right and left with similar architectural treatment and entrances. Area railings are present. Originally opened by the London School Board as Buckingham Terrace School, it is a notable example of Victorian school architecture.
