Description
Gloucester Road Underground Station is a London Underground station consisting of two linked blocks. On the right is the District Railway booking hall, built in 1868, and on the left is the Piccadilly Railway entrance, constructed in 1906 by Leslie Green. The booking hall is made of yellow stock brick, stands two storeys high, and features five windows. It has a stone balustrade with ball finials and brick stacks. The ground floor has been renewed and includes an arcaded opening. A dentil cornice separates the ground and first floors, and there is a mosaic inscription over the first floor that reads: 'Metropolitan and District Railways. Gloucester Road Station'. The building is topped with a cornice and blocking course. To the left, there is a dark red faience block with a large arched window and a modillion cornice that returns to Courtfield Road. The platforms for the Piccadilly line retain their original tilework, which includes 'WAY OUT' and 'NO EXIT' signs. Gloucester Road is a unique example of the combination of two different corporate architectural styles.
