Description

This building, originally constructed in 1899, is a three-storey structure with a basement and mansard roof, designed by Arthur H. Mackmurdo for the painter Mortimer Menpes. It is situated on the corner of Cadogan Gardens and Symons Street. The facade is primarily red brick with a slate roof, and features four bays facing Cadogan Gardens and three bays facing Symons Street. The ground floor has tripartite windows with square, gauged heads. Windows on the first and second floors are linked to form oriels on the Symons Street elevation and flush windows on the Cadogan Gardens elevation, all with inverted ogee aprons beneath. The Cadogan Gardens entrance is distinguished by paired pilasters supporting corbelled brackets that support a first-floor balcony with a bellied iron railing. A prominent coving and cornice run along the top of the building. The mansard roof has casement windows with segmental pediments. The building is now used as part of Peter Jones store.
