Description

This is a pair of semi-detached houses at numbers 248-258 Caledonian Road, Islington, dating from the early 19th century. The houses are built of yellow brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco finishes. The roofs are largely hidden behind parapets, although some sections are covered with artificial slate and Welsh slate.

They are three storeys tall, with a basement level, and each house has two windows facing the street. A single-storey porch links the two properties, set back to the side and featuring pilasters and an overlight above the flat-arched entrance. The basement and ground floor are stuccoed, with the ground floor elaborately decorated with banded rustication. All windows have flat arches. A decorative band separates the floors; the first-floor windows have stucco architraves, and a small cornice with paterae (sculpted, ornamental features) and cast-iron window guards (though these are missing from numbers 248-50). A cornice and blocking course were recreated on numbers 248-50. The other two blocks have hipped roofs, and there are chimney stacks built into the party walls between the houses.
