Description

The Hat and Feathers public house dates to circa 1860, with alterations to the ground floor around 1900. It is constructed of polished granite, brick, and stucco, with a roof hidden behind a parapet. The building is four storeys high, with a basement, and has a seven-window facade that bows on the corner of Goswell Road and Clerkenwell Road.

The ground floor features a plinth of black polished granite and slender piers of pink polished granite, supporting a fascia with early 20th-century glazed and painted panels reading ‘PARTIES CATERED FOR / HAT AND FEATHERS / RESTAURANT’. The curved frontage, along with that facing Goswell Road, retains original woodwork to the entrances, including scrolled pediments and engraved glass, alongside leaded glass overlights to the windows. A moulded and bracketed stucco cornice tops the ground floor.

The two westernmost bays in Clerkenwell Road have simple flat-arched windows, with a stucco band running to the parapet. The central section of the curved frontage is distinguished by two flat-arched first-floor windows flanked by engaged Ionic columns with wreathed capitals, which support an entablature that curves and is topped with urn-like finials. Above these are flat-arched second-floor windows. Giant stucco pilasters with ornate foliage capitals and fruit and foliage pendants are positioned either side of the centrepiece, supporting ornate brackets and a moulded stucco cornice. The outer windows under this cornice, in both Clerkenwell Road and Goswell Road, have moulded stucco architraves. The third floor has pairs of round-arched windows recessed between antae, statues of Classical female figures on either side, and flat-arched windows with moulded stucco architraves. The parapet features a segmental-arched panel, flanked by scrolled consoles and a balustrade, inscribed 'THE HAT AND FEATHERS'.

The interior shows significant alteration, but retains dado panelling. In the bar facing Goswell Road are panelled and glazed partitions from around 1900, alongside a bar front. The bar facing Clerkenwell Road retains some dado panelling and a staircase with turned balusters.
