Description

This is a block of 72 flats, part of the Golden Lane Estate, a design that won a competition in 1952. The block itself was designed in 1955 and constructed between 1958 and 1961. The original competition was won by Geoffrey Powell, with the subsequent estate developed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, and Ove Arup and Partners acting as engineers.

The building's structure incorporates reinforced concrete floor slabs, brick piers that form arches over the basement, concrete access decks, and red cladding panels positioned beneath the windows. A flat roof completes the design. The building rises six storeys over an open basement, which houses residents' stores. These stores are accessed via steps leading down from the entrance court, and connect to tennis courts (originally a bowling green) and a recreation centre. A car park is located beneath the building, extending under a raised walkway that runs in front of the block. Four prominent circular ventilation shafts are key features of the building’s appearance. The flats are arranged as bedsits, with pairs of units accessible via staircases at each end and a lift located at the west end, which is shared with Crescent House. The windows are aluminium framed, and the exterior doors are timber, accessed via galleries on the north side featuring openwork concrete balustrading. The interiors are not considered to be of particular architectural interest.

The development of the Golden Lane Estate is further detailed in the listing for Great Arthur House.
