Description

The community centre, built between 1955 and 1957, is situated next to an attached pond. The design was the winning entry in a competition held in 1952, created by Geoffry Powell, with the construction carried out by the architectural firm Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, and engineering by Ove Arup and Partners. The building features grey brick walls, some of which are load-bearing, and reinforced concrete, topped with a flat roof.

The entrance is located on the ground floor, which serves as the upper storey, while the lower floor is set in a basement courtyard that is partially sunken, providing views of the pool and formal garden. The ground floor includes a hall with a raised roof over the stage, as well as dressing rooms and a kitchen. The lower floor contains a club room and games area. The front entrance hall has full-height timber windows within a set-back screen, and there are double timber doors with tile cladding on either side. Clerestory glazing is present on the sides and on the right-hand side of the garden front, above the tile cladding, while the remaining one and a half storeys are fully glazed. Fire exits on the far side lead to walkways on both levels.

The interiors are simple, featuring timber floors in the main hall and clubrooms. The pool area has stone surrounds, with stepping stones added between 1957 and 1958. The community centre was a key component of the competition brief, and its two-level design, along with the treatment of the pool surround and the paved area at the rear, exemplify the aesthetic principles of Chamberlin, Powell and Bon.
