Description
The Cripplegate Institute is a building from 1894, designed by Sidney Smith. It serves as an institute containing libraries, an auditorium, committee rooms, and classrooms. The structure is made of red brick with stone dressings and stands five storeys tall with eight main bays. The central entrance is located within the building. The ground floor features round-headed windows, while the first and third floors have square-headed windows, the latter of which includes blind keystoned segmental tympana. The second and fourth floors are adorned with semicircular windows. Stone polygonal pilaster strips are positioned between the bays on the second, third, and fourth storeys, and there are string courses between the storeys. Cornices are present above the ground, second, third, and fourth storeys. The windows have timber mullions and transoms. A balustrade with obelisk pinnacles is found at the parapet, and there is a central carved pediment.
