Description

This is a pair of irregular villas, numbers 1 to 4 (consecutive) and number 25, built in the 1830s as part of the layout of Prideaux Place and Wharton Street in Islington. The streets were designed by John Booth and his son, surveyors for the Lloyd Baker Estate.

The villas are constructed of gold-coloured stock bricks laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco dressings, vermiculated quoins, and an entablature. The roofs are hidden behind a parapet, with brick or stucco-rendered stacks. The architectural style is restrained Greek Revival.

Number 25 has a projecting portico entrance facing Wharton Street, while the villas in Prideaux Place have a side-hall entrance to their outer bay. The facade of numbers 1 to 4 in Prideaux Place is two windows wide, with an additional single window facing Wharton Street. The houses facing Prideaux Place are separated by vermiculated, rusticated quoins.

A low flight of steps leads to a 20th-century rebuilt portico in Wharton Street, featuring antae supporting an entablature. The entrance has a pair of original panelled doors and a rectangular overlight. The Prideaux Place entrance features a double-panelled door and rectangular overlight, topped by a vermiculated stucco keystone flanked by scrolls. The windows are largely 6/6 sash windows with margin lights, except those on the Wharton Street elevation, which are 8/8 sashes. Stucco sill bands are present. Upper storeys show evidence of patching. A projecting stucco cornice sits below the parapet, which has stone coping or a blocking course. Original iron railings are attached to the property.
