Description

Nos 51-53 on Charterhouse Street is a cold store built in 1899, designed by C Stanley Peach. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and decorative elements, featuring tiled mansard pavilions, although the main roof is not visible. It has two main stages and consists of seven bays on the ground floor. The ground floor showcases Ionic half columns in the center five bays and Ionic console capitals on the end bays. The end bays have blind arches, while the second bay from the left features an archway. The central bays are open, with pairs of timber doors or roll-down doors. Above the ground floor, a cornice displays the words 'London Central Markets Cold Storage' on the frieze.

The end bays of the upper stage are slightly advanced, adorned with stone quoins and low decorative pavilion roofs. Pilaster strips flank the center bay, which rises to an arched window set within a central pediment. There are cartouches on the center and end bays, with the end bays also featuring narrow corniced slit-like apertures beneath. A dentil cornice crowns the first stage, with scrolly consoles below the central pediment. Ball finials are positioned to the left and right of the pediment, and turned finials are present on the pavilion roofs, each with an inset circular window framed by decorative architrave. This building was constructed for J Van den Bergh, a cooper and margarine merchant, and is noted as a relatively early cold store that has been treated architecturally.
