Description
Number 6-40 (Even) is a row of terraced houses built in the early 19th century, constructed from yellow and brown brick in Flemish bond with stucco, and topped by a roof that is hidden by a parapet. The terrace features breaks between the houses, specifically between nos 6 and 8, and nos 8 and 10, as well as between nos 18 and 20 and nos 36 and 38. Each house has three storeys above a basement and two windows on each floor.
There are steps leading up to an elliptical-arched entrance that has gauged brick heads, wooden pilaster jambs, a cornice, and a fanlight above. Most of the houses have decorative glazing, except for nos 6-10, 14, and 34, which have panelled doors of original design. The ground-floor windows are round-arched with gauged brick heads and recessed 6/6 sash windows. The upper windows are flat-arched with gauged brick heads and recessed 6/6 sashes, many of which have been replaced. The first-floor windows are larger, with piano nobile proportions, set within a recessed round-arched panel featuring gauged brick heads, and linked by stucco springing bands. Iron balconies are present on nos 14, 18, 34, 36, and 40. A narrow brick string course and parapet run along the top of the terrace. Most of the houses appear to have been rebuilt in the area of the parapet. Notably, no 6 has a late 20th-century round-arched stuccoed and rusticated archway leading to its recessed entrance. The area is enclosed by railings with spearhead finials.
