Lawrance Family Monument, South Enclosure

The Lawrance family monument is a headstone located in the South Enclosure of Bunhill Fields Burial Ground, dating from 1806. Made of sandstone, the monument features an upright slab with a shaped top. The inscription begins with "The family grave / of / DAVID MOUNTAGUE LAWRANCE / who died April 19th 1806 / Aged 25 Years. / The dying words of the Deceas'd / was 'Glory Glory Glory'." Additional inscriptions note the burials of Lawrance's father, grandson, and other family members.

Bunhill Fields was established as a burial ground in 1665 and became a significant Nonconformist cemetery due to its location just outside the City boundary and its independence from any established church. Notable figures such as John Bunyan, Daniel Defoe, and William Blake are buried here. The cemetery was closed for burials in 1853 and transformed into a public park in 1867, with further landscaping done after war damage in 1964-5.

The Lawrance family monument is designated for its inscription, which reflects the enthusiastic piety of the time and the Evangelical spirituality of the Bunhill Fields Nonconformists. It also holds group value with other listed tombs in the south enclosure of the Grade I registered Bunhill Fields Burial Ground.
