Description

The monument is an early 18th-century chest tomb located within the South Enclosure of Bunhill Fields Burial Ground. Constructed from Portland stone with a sandstone top, it takes the form of a stone chest with corner balusters framing raised and fielded inscription panels, although the text on these panels is no longer legible. The monument commemorates Henry Cromwell (1658-1711), grandson of the Lord Protector, and his wife Hannah, née Hewling (died 1732), daughter of a wealthy London merchant. Henry Cromwell died whilst on service in Portugal, and Hannah was known for attempting to secure a pardon for her brothers who were executed following the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685. Their sons, Richard (1695-1759) and William (1693-1772), both lawyers, are buried in a nearby Cromwell family tomb. Bunhill Fields was first enclosed as a burial ground in 1665, becoming a significant Nonconformist cemetery, and was closed for burials in 1853. After war damage, the burial ground was re-landscaped in 1964-5. The monument is designated at Grade II for its historical significance, commemorating a member of the Cromwell family and Hannah's role in a notable historical event, and for its group value within the Grade I registered Bunhill Fields Burial Ground, particularly in relation to the other listed tombs in the South Enclosure and the adjacent Cromwell family monument.
