Description

Numbers 26 to 34 form a terrace of houses on Northampton Square, built in the early 19th century, with Nos 26, 27, and 29 dating from 1810 and Nos 28 and 30 to 34 likely from around 1810. They were probably developed by Thomas Woollcott. The houses are constructed of yellow brick in Flemish bond, topped with mansard roofs covered in Welsh and artificial slate.

The buildings are four storeys high, with a basement level, and have two windows each, except for No. 26, which is double fronted with four windows. All the window and door openings have brick surrounds. The entrances are round-arched and recessed, each with a fanlight and a panelled door of original design. The doorcases differ, with No. 26 featuring engaged Roman Doric columns and a modillion cornice; No. 27 having fluted pilasters, circle stops, and a moulded cornice; No. 28 featuring engaged reeded Ionic columns with acanthus leaves; No. 29 with fluted pilasters, lion stops and a plain cornice; and Nos 30-34 with reeded engaged columns and a modillion cornice. Ground-floor windows are round-arched and set back, with a stucco band marking the first-floor level. The first-floor windows are flat arched and also set back, with iron balconies. Second-floor windows are similarly flat-arched. The windows are largely original 6/6 sash windows, although their distribution varies across the terrace. An original rainwater head is situated between Nos 32 and 33. A dentil cornice runs along the top, above a parapet. Dormers are visible in the mansard roofs and there are stacks built into the party walls. The front area has cast-iron railings, with a wrought-iron lampholder at No. 26.

The interior of No. 26 contains a cantilevered staircase, oval in plan, with a wreathed handrail, open string, and stick balusters. The interiors of the other properties have not been inspected.
