Description
This is a K6 telephone kiosk, dating from the 20th century. It stands adjacent to a late 19th-century cattle drinking trough on the north side of Queens Avenue, in Muswell Hill, near the junction with Muswell Hill Broadway.
The kiosk is a standardised design made of cast iron, painted red overall, with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. Applied crowns are located on the top panels, rather than being perforated. The kiosk features rectangular white display signs reading "TELEPHONE" beneath the shallow curved roof. The internal equipment has been modernised.
Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee, the K6 was developed from his earlier K2 design, which drew inspiration from Neo-classical architecture. The K6 was more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective to mass produce. It is considered a milestone in 20th-century industrial design, with over 70,000 examples produced before being largely replaced in the 1960s. The kiosk’s design is notable for its artistry, functionality, and iconic status. Its setting forms a group of characteristic London street furniture with the adjacent cattle trough and the nearby listed Muswell Hill Public Library.
