Description

Victoria Junior School was built in 1875, designed by E R Robson. It is constructed of yellow brick with red dressings and stone carvings, and has a slate roof. The building is asymmetrical, with a plan of one to two storeys, and exhibits Queen Anne style architecture alongside Gothic details. The six main bays face Becklow Road. The single-storeyed central section features three small gabled half dormers, while the two bays to the left and the right-hand bay have larger gables. The windows are tall, with timber mullions and transoms. Most windows have segmental heads, although the upper window on the left side is pointed with three lights and glazing bars in an ogee form; smaller ogees are also present in the dormer glazing. The windows are sash windows with small panes. The second gable from the left features a title tablet within an elaborate Gothic frame, complete with crockets and angel corbels. Elaborate moulded chimneys rise from the building. Foliated plaques adorn the other gables. The return elevation to the left, spanning thirteen bays, is also notable, displaying angel corbels.
