Description

St Chad's Vicarage is a red brick building constructed around 1870 by James Brooks. It stands three storeys high with an attic and features a steeply-pitched slated roof. The layout is irregular, with a left bay under a gable that has two windows. Next to this is a projecting three-quarter round turret topped with a conical roof, followed by a half-gabled section next to a blank chimney-breast, and finally a narrow windowed right bay. The design suggests a fortified medieval house with Scottish-French influences.

The building has continuous cill strings and hoodmoulds on each floor, with the hoodmoulds rising to pointed arches filled with header bond above the windows. The turret contains closely-set lancet windows, with their heads and cills touching stone bands. The main entrance is located on the left, under a pointed arch, featuring a boarded door with decorative iron hinges, accessed by four steps. There is also a subsidiary door to the right of the turret. To the left, there is a short, one-storey link connecting the vicarage to the Church. St Chad's Church and Vicarage are part of a cohesive group.
