Description

This is a group of ten houses, numbers 21 to 30, forming a symmetrical scheme dating from the early to mid-19th century, built in a Tudor-cum-Jacobean style. The group of three houses in the centre is flanked by straight pairs of houses, with additional blocks extending outwards. The arrangement is slightly unbalanced due to number 30 being a single house and number 21 being offset behind number 22. The houses are connected by linking walls. Each house has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with one window in the main bay and another in a recessed entrance bay. They are constructed of stock brick with stucco dressings. The roofs are hipped and tiled, featuring grouped diagonal brick chimneys. The shaped gable ends have stuccoed copings and brick kneelers. Stucco window surrounds are present, some with hoodmoulds. Ground floor and first-floor centre bays project as squares or canted bays. All windows are sash windows with decorative lozenge glazing. The entrances have six-panel doors with patterned rectangular fanlights, sheltered by plain hoods. This group of houses is historically linked with numbers 1 to 10, 13 to 30, and the railings around De Beauvoir Square, along with number 89 Mortimer Road.
