Description
This is an early to mid-19th century convex crescent of houses, numbered 406 to 422, located on Mare Street. The buildings are primarily three storeys high, with some having two windows and others only one. They are constructed of stock brick and feature giant stucco pilasters which divide the houses and support an entablature with a modillion cornice and blocking course. Most of the buildings have flat dormers in low-pitched slated roofs, although one, the Crown Public House, has a raised mansard roof with dormers. The windows are sash windows, some with glazing bars, set within moulded architraves. First-floor windows have cornices, and a few are topped with pediments. The ground floors now have modern projecting shop fronts. The Crown Public House has an early 20th-century ground floor deeply recessed, with a glazed, bowed centre and fascia supported by cast iron columns. Above the fascia is a cornice and a handsome wrought iron screen displaying the pub's name and symbol. The terrace is listed partly for its importance on a corner site, and numbers 406 to 422 form a group.
