Description

This is a row of three early 18th-century houses on Shoreditch High Street. Nos 187 to 189 have undergone later alterations. The houses are built of Flemish bond brick, with the exception of No. 186, which is red brick and Nos 187 and 188, that are stock brick, with No. 189 painted. All have slate mansard roofs with dormers and brick ridge and end stacks. No. 186 incorporates a carriageway at ground level. The ground floors of Nos 187 and 188 have 20th-century shop fronts, while No. 189 has a modern shop front. The upper floors of Nos 187 and 188 have sash windows with twelve panes of glass, set within raised stucco architraves, while No. 189 has later sash windows with moulded architraves to the first floor and flat brick arches over the windows on the second floor. The windows of No. 186 have glazing bars under gauged brick arches with keystones, the upper ones supporting a brick cornice. A stepped brick cornice runs along the top of the building, below the mansard roof. The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to be of interest. Nos 186 to 191 form a group and contribute to the area's group value.
