Description
The Church of St Giles, located on Fore Street, is a Grade I listed building that dates back to the mid-16th century, incorporating elements from an earlier tower. The church was refaced in the 19th century using squared rubble with Portland stone dressings, while the upper stage of the tower, which features a timber cupola, is made of red brick and was built between 1683 and 1684. The roof was renewed after it was damaged by fire during World War II, which also destroyed most of the interior fittings, leaving only a few wall monuments. The church has an aisled nave with a short chancel. At the time of the survey, a west gallery was under construction to accommodate an organ from St Luke's Church on Old Street. Additionally, there is a 19th-century south-east vestry that is in keeping with the character of the church.
