Description

Finsbury House is a Grade II listed building constructed between 1893 and 1894 by the architectural firm Gordon, Lowther & Gunton. This five-storey corner building, which includes a basement, features an enriched classical style and is faced with stone.

The design includes a curved three-bay corner that houses the entrance, flanked by polished granite columns of a modified Doric order, which support a curved entablature and a low balustrade. The elevations facing Blomfield Street and Finsbury Circus consist of ten paired bays, symmetrically arranged, with a giant order of Corinthian columns rising from a channelled ground storey base through the first and second storeys. These columns support a deep entablature with a dentilled and modillioned cornice that projects over the detached columns of the central bays and wraps around the corner, creating a unified appearance.

The building features paired architraved sash windows from the first to the fourth storeys, with the windows on the first and fourth storeys topped with pediments. The attics are recessed, and the upper attic includes a series of pediments. The rounded corner is highlighted by a double entablature, a segmental pediment, and urns. Additionally, there are cast iron railings at the basement level, adorned with heavy spearhead finials and a key design.
