Description
Goldsmiths Hall is a Grade I listed building located on Foster Lane, constructed between 1829 and 1835 by Philip Hardwick. This detached building is made of Portland stone and showcases a rich classical style. It stands three storeys tall and features eleven windows on the main west front, which is highlighted by an engaged, six-columned Corinthian portico set on a high pedestal that extends through all three storeys. The side returns have seven windows and four pilasters. The first-floor windows are pedimented, with the central five on the west front featuring balconies supported by brackets and adorned with elaborate carvings above. The entrance is enhanced by a pair of lamps and quality metalwork, along with four lamp standards on granite bases, although the lanterns may have been renewed. The rear of the building is irregular and includes a cast iron area railing and five large, round-arched windows on the first floor that serve the hall. The interior is particularly notable, especially the staircase, hall, and the north front room. The building is also scheduled as an ancient monument.
