Description

No. 7 Wine Office Court is an office building constructed between 1868 and 1870 by John S Lee for Robert Burt and Company, printers. From 1870 to 1892, it served as the first home of the Press Association. The building is made of stock brick with stone dressings and has a three-bay plan, featuring a narrower central bay above the entrance. It stands four storeys tall, with the roof obscured by a projecting modillion cornice.

All windows are fitted with glazing bar sashes; the third floor has single windows, while the central window features a round head. On the lower floors, tripartite windows are separated by thin barley-sugar columns with small Ionic capitals and are topped with four-centred arches that have decorated spandrels. The ground floor includes ironwork details. The entrance features a four-panelled door beneath a plain fanlight, set in an incised moulded surround with a keystone and a cornice supported by console brackets.

Inside, the building is simple except for the foyer, which has a deep cornice, an inner archway, and a timber and glass screen under a pediment. The staircase has a curved lower flight and timber balustrades. The establishment of the Press Association in this building played a significant role in the development of Fleet Street as the centre of the British newspaper industry.
