Description

The following building shall be added:

WINE OFFICE COURT TQ 3181 SW (west side) 627-/7/10048 No. 7

II

Offices, 1868-70 by John S Lee for Robert Burt and Company, printers, but between 1870 and 1892 the first home of the Press Association. Stock brick with stone dressings. Three-bay plan with narrower central bay over door, four storeys. Roof obscured behind projecting modillion cornice. All windows with glazing bar sashes; single windows to third floor and in centre. the latter with round heads; to either side on lower floors tripartite windows separated by thin barley-sugar columns with tiny Ionic capitals and under four-centred arches with decorated spandrels. Ironwork to ground floor. Four-panelled door under plain fanlight in incised moulded surround with keystone under console-bracketed cornice. Interior simple, save for foyer, with deep cornice, inner archway, and timber and glass screen under pediment. Stairs with curved lower flight, and timber balustrades. It was the establishment of the Press Association in these premises that triggered the development of Fleet Street, long noted for its printing trades, as the centre of the British newspaper industry.
