Description

Nos 143 and 144 Fleet Street is a late 19th-century building featuring an elaborate carved stone Gothic facade. It has two gabled bays and stands four storeys high, plus a roof storey. The ground floor has modern shopfronts that partly conceal the original stone surround, which includes zigzag, prism, and rope mouldings.

The facade is dominated by a pair of canted oriels that project slightly and span nearly the entire width of the building. These oriels rise through the first, second, and third floors and contain paired stone mullioned sash windows at each level, each topped with elaborately traceried heads. The blind returns and window aprons also feature traceried panels, and the oriel parapets are adorned with pierced tracery. The divisions between the party walls are highlighted by rope moulded shafts that extend through the upper three storeys.

At the first floor level, between the oriels, there is a hooded niche that houses a statue of Mary, Queen of Scots. The twin gables are decorated with finely shaped, pierced, and ornamented bargeboards. The building has a tiled roof with iron cresting and prominent stone party stacks that feature relief carving and moulded caps.
