Description

The Cathedral Church of St Paul was built between 1675 and 1710 by Sir Christopher Wren, following the destruction of the medieval cathedral in the Great Fire. It is designed in a classical style, primarily using Portland stone, and features a central dome and western towers. The cathedral includes a large crypt and houses significant contemporary and later fittings and monuments, with a few remnants from the previous church. Important 19th-century fittings, monuments, and decorations are also present. The dome is painted by Thornhill, and above the two west chapels are the library and music room. The southwest tower contains a fine circular staircase. The south transept is accessed via elaborate steps that have walls, piers, urns, and gates. Broad steps lead to the west front, which is flanked by pedestals supporting decorative iron lamp standards designed by Lutyens.
