Description

Numbers 18-24 are a terrace of four houses built around 1801-1806 by James Burton. The houses are constructed of multi-coloured stock brick, with the upper floors of No. 18 refaced and the top floor of No. 20 also altered. The ground floors are finished in stucco, with Nos. 18 and 20 featuring rusticated detailing. The buildings rise four storeys and include basements, with three windows each, except for No. 18, which has two windows and a blank return wall facing Herbrand Street. Each house has round-arched doorways with fluted surrounds and radial patterned fanlights, except for No. 24. No. 18 features a doorcase with pilasters and shaped brackets that support a cornice. The recessed sash windows have gauged, reddened, flat brick arches. There are cast-iron balconies for the first-floor windows, while No. 24 has cast-iron guards instead. The terrace is topped with parapets. The attached cast-iron railings with urn finials provide additional detail to the areas in front of the houses. The interiors have not been inspected.
