Description
15-23 Southampton Row is a shopping parade with offices, previously flats, located at the south-east corner of Sicilian Avenue. It was built between 1906 and 1910 by architect R.J. Worley for the Bedford Estate and has been altered in the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with white terracotta details and features a slate roof.
The exterior consists of four storeys with four and a half window bays, plus a four-storey tourelle that has 2-light transom and mullion windows starting from the first floor on the right side facing Sicilian Avenue. The ground floor has modern plate glass windows but retains the original first-floor design, which can be compared to Nos 25-35 Southampton Row. Corinthian columns on plinths support an entablature with a plain terracotta frieze at the new first-floor level. There is a goods entrance on the left. The first, second, and third floors feature three-light windows on the left, followed by three canted bay windows with five lights, and single-light recessed windows on the right. All windows include terracotta transoms and mullions, and a terracotta modillion cornice runs along the top. Above the second-to-last bays are pedimented gables with small Venetian windows. The tourelle's fourth floor rises above the cornice and is topped with a conical roof.
The interiors were not inspected. Nos 15-23 Southampton Row are part of a cohesive development alongside Nos 1-29 (odd) and 6-20 (even) Sicilian Avenue, as well as Nos 25-35 (odd) and 35A Southampton Row and Nos 1-6 Vernon Place.
