Description
The British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy is a detached studio house, now functioning as a clinic. It was built in 1882 by Batterbury and Huxley for Thomas Davidson, a historical painter, and was converted in 1954. The building is constructed of red brick with rubbed brick dressings and features hipped tiled roofs with segmental dormers, tall enriched brick slab chimney-stacks, and projecting eaves.
The exterior consists of two storeys, an attic, and a semi-basement, with a right-hand recessed studio extension that is lower due to the steeply sloping site. There are four windows plus a large studio window on the right. The entrance has a fine rubbed brick round-arched doorcase with Ionic pilasters supporting a pediment, leading to recessed panelled double doors with a patterned fanlight, approached by a curved flight of steps. Above the door, there is a narrow segmental-arched sash with an enriched apron and a dated terracotta plaque. To the left, a segmental bowed bay rises full height from the basement, featuring three narrow segmental-arched sashes on each floor; the ground floor has Ionic pilasters supporting an entablature, while the first floor has Composite pilasters supporting an entablature, all made of rubbed brick.
The studio extension includes a wide four-light projecting bay that rises through the ground and first floor, both featuring transom and mullion windows with small leaded panes and stained glass roundels. The ground floor has an enriched entablature, and the first floor has an enriched panelled apron, entablature, and segmental pediment. The right-hand return has two narrow segmental-arched lights with keystones and similar glazing flanking a full-height chimney-stack. The interior has not been inspected.
