Description

The garden walls, terraces, steps, and garden arbour date from around 1600, with later alterations and additions. The northern and western terrace walls originally formed the boundary walls of the 17th-century Dorchester House, a large mansion that stood to the east of Witanhurst before its demolition around 1688-9. The walls are constructed of red brick and incorporate parapets, terraces, and steps leading down to the lower garden. Within the garden of number 6, in the northwest corner, are the remains of a red brick arbour from around 1600, featuring curved bastions (mainly rebuilt) overlooking the garden. The north wall includes half-round columns and round-arched niches flanking an arched doorway, which has been later blocked.
