Description
The Hampstead Figure is a sculpture located to the north of the Swiss Cottage Library, created in 1964 by the artist F E McWilliam. This reclining abstracted female figure is made of bronze and is mounted on a plinth. It is inscribed with the title 'The Hampstead Figure, 1964' and bears the artist's signature. The sculpture was commissioned as part of a group of civic buildings for the borough of Hampstead, designed by Sir Basil Spence, Bonnington and Collins, and it complements the surrounding architecture. F E McWilliam, who lived from 1909 to 1992, was a prominent British sculptor, although many of his public works have not endured well over time.
