Description

Thomas More Chambers is a legal building located at 51 and 52 Carey Street in Camden, constructed in 1888 by architect George Sherrin, whose initials GMA are inscribed in the lintel. The structure features cut red brick and stone with shopfronts on the ground floor. The façade includes two broad and two narrow windows facing Carey Street, with an entrance located beneath the left narrow window. The building stands two storeys tall and has a prominent single chimney stack aligned with the front. Decorative elements include cut red brick swags and fruit motifs, oriels in the broader bays on the left, and intricate stonework. The cornice is adorned with egg-and-dart moulding, and there is a bold projecting parapet with elaborate stone decorations. A single bay returns to Serle Street, similarly styled, featuring an oriel above the shopfront. The corner of the building displays a plaque commemorating Sir Thomas More, who was Lord Chancellor of England in 1535, and there is a panelled door framed in a Gibbs surround.

Inside, the entrance leads to New Square, Lincoln's Inn, which features marble stone floors and a staircase with bulbous vase-shaped timber balusters. There is also a secondary staircase with a wrought-iron balustrade along the Serle Street elevation.
