Description
Derby Lodge, formerly known as Derby Buildings, is a block of flatted philanthropic housing built around 1865. It was constructed by Sydney Waterlow's Improved Industrial Dwellings Company with the assistance of builder Matthew Allen. This building shares the same materials and architectural features as Derby Lodge, flats 1-36 on Britannia Street, with which it forms a group. The block consists of a sequence of four units containing flats numbered 37-53, 54-68, 69-84, and 85-102. Each unit features an identical design, including a 2-bay full-height balcony-stair recess, similar to those found in units 1-10 on Britannia Street. The ground floor is flanked by a pair of tripartite windows, while the upper floors have single windows. This building is among the earliest flats constructed by Waterlow's influential and prolific Improved Industrial Dwellings Company. The interior has not been inspected.
